photography and musings by an amateur photographer aspiring to be more
I used to be a metalhead. I had hair down to my shoulders, went to lots of concerts with fat, hairy guys, and wore lots of black t-shirts. (However, I always kept personal hygeine a priority: Cleanliness is next to godliness). Metal still runs through this sellout's veins, though... I recently went to Ozzfest after a 4 to 5 year hiatus (because it was free...), and saw one of my personal favorites there: 3 Inches of Blood.
3 Inches of Blood are an incredible metal outfit from Vancouver. They play an epic blend of Metal that harkens back to the days of 80's Power Metal, yet is extremely fresh and with top-notch songwriting. On top of all that, they play it with incredible technical skill and spectacular lyrics that border on parody, but end up being all-around spectacular. What other band would write a trilogy of songs about a doomed pirate ship? You can tell these guys genuinely love the genre and celebrate it proudly. That's rare these days, in any genre. Not to mention they're nice guys, too. Their bassist, Nick, was nice enough to chat with my friends and I, and they were very appreciative of their fans at their meet & greet.
This interview with them explains their love for metal and some details around their previous album. If anything, it's worth reading for the explanation of song titles: "['Premonition of Pain' is] about a soothsayer alerting the powers that be that they're foolish and making unwise decisions, and of course the king won't listen and is crushed because of his own folly... " A-mazing.
You can hear some of their music on their site. This stuff definitely isn't for everyone; Not many can handle such (amazingly) brutal vocals. But if you're into metal at all, I strongly suggest you give it a shot.
